YMCA Fitness Membership Prices, Reviews and Benefits

The first YMCA was founded in London, England, in 1844 by a group of twelve men led by George Williams. Their mission was to improve men's spiritual and physical well-being, and it wasn't long before more YMCA locations popped up all throughout England and Ireland. The YMCA concept became so successful within a decade that it was replicated in India, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and other European countries.

Henry Dunant, the YMCA Geneva Secretary, was the one who proposed the notion of a global YMCA movement. In 1855, Dunant, who would later be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and found the International Committee of the Red Cross, assisted in the organisation of the first YMCA World Conference. The members of the organisation agreed on the group's aim and goals at this meeting, and their international headquarters was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1878.

The YMCA flourished fast from the 1870s through the 1930s, and while they emphasised Christian beliefs, they also included athletic activities in its programme. In one of these YMCA gyms, James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, while William Morgan, another YMCA member, devised volleyball in 1895 to allow senior members of the organisation to join.

Captain Thomas Sullivan (1800-1859), an American missionary and seaman, created the first YMCA in the United States on December 29, 1851 in Boston, Massachusetts. Sullivan was familiar with the YMCA in London and chose to establish one in the United States so sailors would have a place to call home. The Boston YMCA had grown to 1,500 members by 1853, and Franklin W. Smith was elected its first president in 1855. It wasn't long before the YMCA had grown across the country, and in addition to fitness programmes, it also provided shelter and nursing services prior to the Civil War.

Today, these programmes continue to emphasise the importance of honesty, responsibility, respect, and confidence building, as well as wellness training, to members.
